Appeasement

At the time, appeasement was very popular, but - even at the time - there were people in Britain who disagreed. After March 1939, criticism of appeasement grew, and after Chamberlain was replaced by Churchill in May 1940, appeasement was regarded as weak and servile. In the years after the war, most historians regarded appeasement as a failure, but recently - perhaps as a results of attitudes to the Iraq War - some historians have chosen to be less critical of Chamberlain.
