Introduction

The Strike lasted nine days.  At first it was successful.  As time went on, however, volunteer workers began to undermine the strike action.  Also, the government took strong measures to destroy the strike.  Some strikers replied with violence.  On 12 May 1926, the leaders of the TUC called off the Strike.  Their money for strike pay was running out, and they feared the Strike would end up in a violent revolution.

The miners fought on alone until 30 November, when they were forced to return to work – for less money and longer hours.  They had lost everything.
