Introduction

At the time of the First World War, all the great powers of Europe relied on conscription; they 'called up' their men to the army.

Only Britain had a voluntary army (Britain did not introduce conscription until 1916, two years after the war started).

The British Commander-in-Chief, Lord Kitchener (picture 10) realised that vast numbers of men would be needed.

A huge propaganda campaign was therefore mounted to try to persuade men to join up.  Posters played a major role in this campaign.
